From November 29 to December 8, 2023, Benin City will host the inaugural edition of the Benin Art Fair, themed Homepage to the Red City. Curated by James Irabor, this ambitious initiative aims to celebrate and promote the rich artistic heritage of Edo State, providing a vital platform for both traditional and contemporary artists from the region.
The Benin Art Fair (TBAF) seeks to reclaim Edo State’s prominence in the contemporary art discourse within Nigeria and across Africa. Organizers emphasize the importance of honouring the state’s artistic legacy while showcasing the talents of artists who either hail from or currently reside in Benin. Adetiloye Oluwatosin Jekami, National Programs Director of Thought Pyramid Art Centre, noted that the fair's purpose is to restore the artistic prestige of Benin City, highlighting the evolution of its art scene beyond the well-known bronze artefacts.
The event will commence with a private viewing for invited guests on November 29, offering an exclusive preview from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The public viewing will follow, running daily from November 30 to December 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The opening day will feature live wood sculpting and performance art, setting the stage for an engaging experience.
A key aspect of the fair will be keynote talks led by acclaimed artists such as Dr. Bruce Onobrakpeya and Enotie Ogbebor. They will engage in discussions that bridge traditional and contemporary art practices, addressing critical topics including art education, cultural preservation, and the role of photography in capturing history.
On December 7, the fair will culminate in a concert night featuring celebrated Edo music legends, enriching the cultural experience for attendees. Additionally, the fair will host a photography festival, contemporary art exhibitions, and a free sip and paint event on December 1, inviting participation from the community.
TBAF not only aims to celebrate established artists but also to highlight emerging talents, showcasing the innovative directions in which local artists are moving. The fair serves as a catalyst for revitalizing Edo State’s creative culture, establishing it as a premier global arts and culture destination.
