AMG Projects has announced the opening of BIG Sculpture: An Anthology of Contemporary Nigerian Sculpture, a group exhibition of new works by some of Nigeria's most celebrated sculptors. Curated by Jide Ogunsanya and Mathew Oyedele, the show features 17 artists across three generations, all sculptors who are doing groundbreaking work in their respective corners of the Nigerian panorama.
At its core, this exhibition highlights the intergenerational dialogue that exists within Nigeria's sculptural community. It foregrounds the transmission of material knowledge—whether in metal, wood, bronze, or found objects—across generations, evincing how younger sculptors reinterpret and innovate upon the foundations laid by their predecessors.
The exhibition includes works by acclaimed artists such as Adeola Balogun, Adcoti Azeez Afeez, Boma Joe Jim, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Bunmi Babatunde, Djakou Kassi Nathalie, Fidelis Odogwu, and Reuben Ugbine, among others. These artists explore a wide range of themes and styles, from traditional African iconography to abstract and conceptual forms.
BIG Sculpture is on view at AMG Projects, 24 Rasheed Alaba Williams Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, from October 29 to November 20, 2024. The exhibition is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm.
