The Galerie Cécile Fakhoury continues its tradition of showcasing groundbreaking contemporary African art with Goumbé, a captivating new solo exhibition by artist Carl Edouard Keïta. Known for its dedication to promoting innovative voices in the global art scene, the gallery has once again positioned itself as a hub for thought-provoking and visually arresting works.

Goumbé, which opened recently in Abidjan, draws inspiration from the historical goumbés, cultural associations formed by migrants from various regions during Côte d'Ivoire's post-independence era. These goumbés played a vital role in shaping the social fabric of Abidjan's working-class neighborhoods. However, they have largely faded from prominence, surviving primarily through traditional dances still practiced by the Malinké community in northern Côte d'Ivoire. Keita's work aims to revive and reflect on this rich heritage, examining how these cultural movements contributed to the construction of national identity in a post-colonial context.
Carl Edouard Keïta’s work is deeply rooted in exploring themes of identity, community, and cultural heritage—elements that resonate strongly within the context of West Africa. His pieces often reflect a dialogue between past traditions and modern realities, offering viewers an opportunity to engage with art that transcends both place and time.
Goumbé is on display at the Cécile Fakhoury Gallery from February 13 to April 12, 2025.
