Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Becomes West Africa’s Highest-Grossing Biopic Ever

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a Bolanle Austen-Peters biopic, has layered its swift sword unto another feat!  Crossing a threshold of over ₦108 million, it has become the highest-grossing West African biopic of all time.

Released in Nigerian theatres on May 17, 2024, the film vaunts exceptional cinematography and a psychedelic screenplay brought to life by talented actors. Veterans such as Joke Silva, Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule, and Kehinde Bankole graced the cast, with Bankole recently winning the Best Lead Actress award at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards for her role in the 2023 movie "Adire."


Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti has garnered numerous nominations and awards in recognition of its creative excellence. It won Best Overall Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the 2023 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) and Best Writing (Movie) at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards.


The biopic also featured the participation of the Nigerian educator and suffragist's grandchildren, with Dotun Ransome-Kuti playing the role of his father, Olikoye Ransom-Kuti, and Kunle-Ransome-Kuti portraying his father as well.
