Future, Past | Art Twenty One, Lagos Nigeria
Tejumola Adenuga's debut exhibition at Art Twenty One, titled "Future, Past," is an exploration of time and place. The exhibition, which runs from April 19 to July 14, 2024, presents a transcendental reflection of home through the artist's evocative artworks.
"Future, Past" takes viewers on a journey to a small village in Western Nigeria, a place steeped in the rich cultural heritage of Yoruba cosmology. In this village, the inhabitants are nurtured by a divine presence that bestows creativity upon them. Through Adenuga's art, viewers are to encounter welders, painters, cobblers, and dressmakers who move through their days with an abundance of creativity, freedom, and an inherent focus on a bright future.
Tejumola Adenuga's artwork in "Future, Past" invites viewers to contemplate the profound connections between time, place, and human existence. Through his considerate attention to detail, tender observations, and practical insights, he unmasks the hidden narratives that shape the village's collective identity.
The exhibition not only celebrates the creativity within the community but also prompts reflection on the fragility of our shared environments, while setting a reminder of the vital importance of preserving and nurturing the sources of inspiration and sustenance that sustain us.
"Future, Past" is currently on view at Art Twenty One.
