The Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź Announces Theme for the 18th International Triennial of Textile, Opens Call for Artist Submissions

The Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź has officially announced the 18th edition of the International Triennial of Textile, formally the International Triennial of Tapestry, marking a significant milestone of fifty years since the inaugural event was founded in 1975. Renowned as one of the world’s foremost events dedicated to the textile medium, this Triennial promises to explore contemporary issues through its theme “Deconstruction/Reconstruction.”

This year’s theme reflects a critical engagement with the current global interface, addressing the tension between established orders and the urgent need for new systems. It resonates with ongoing developments within the Triennial itself, as it introduces a notable change in its curatorial approach. Textiles serve as a unique metaphor for these processes, allowing for a rich exploration of contemporary art that questions traditional beliefs and societal norms.

For the first time, the event will be co-curated by Marta Kowalewska, the museum's chief curator and the curator of the 16th and 17th  editions of the Triennial, and Bukola Oyebode Westerhuis, a Nigerian curator and editor based in Amsterdam. This collaboration aims to bring diverse perspectives to the exhibition, supported by an international jury and the Triennial's programme board.

Artist Application Call

The concept of “Deconstruction/Reconstruction” speaks to the profound conflicts that shape our world, from escalating violence in various regions to the resistance against oppressive ideologies. It encapsulates a duality: the destruction of lives and cultures juxtaposed with the fighting spirit of communities striving for self-determination and justice. In this context, the curators invite artists to engage with the ideas of dismantling existing structures and envisioning new possibilities for coexistence.

The call invites contemporary artists—regardless of generation, gender, or nationality—who utilize textile mediums, methodologies, or integrate textiles with new media practices to submit works that align with the themes of deconstruction and reconstruction.

Submissions will be accepted from October 17, 2024, until January 31, 2025. The selected works will be showcased in the main exhibition, with the qualifying entries announced on the museum’s website by March 24, 2025. An international jury will then determine the winners of the 18th ITT prize, which will be unveiled at the event's opening on October 18, 2025. The top award includes a Gold Medal and a cash prize of €10,000.

The 18th International Triennial of Textile will open in autumn 2025, commemorating half a century of artistic exploration in textile arts. Eligible participants can submit portfolios of works created within the last five years.
