The Chinwe Russell Art Prize is an exciting new initiative aimed at showcasing the exceptional talent of Nigerian visual artists on a global platform. Conceptualized by Chinwe Russell, a distinguished British artist of Nigerian descent, this prize seeks to highlight the diversity and creativity prevalent in the vibrant Nigerian visual art sector while fostering increased local and international recognition.
Who Should Apply?
Visual artists living and working in Nigeria, working in various media, including:
Painting
Sculpture
Textile
Found object art
Recycled material art
Illustration
Ceramics and pottery
All subject matters and more
Submission Guidelines:
Submission is Free: Artists must submit 3 works.
Participation Fee: Selected artists will pay a participation fee of 2500 Naira. Unselected artists will pay nothing and will not be included in the project and the exhibition.
Exhibition Platform: The exhibition will take place online at www.chinwerussell.com.
Submission Period: Opens on www.chinwerussell.com on September 1, 2024, and closes on October 31, 2024.
Announcement of Selected Artists: November 7, 2024.
Online Exhibition: Launches on January 15, 2025, at www.chinwerussell.com.
Public Voting: Opens on January 15, 2025, for the People's Choice Award.
Public Voting results will be announced on 30th Feb 2025.
Judges results will be announced on 15th March.
Exhibition ends 30th March.
All works will be available for sale during the exhibition period.
Prizes:
Top Prize: 300,000 Naira + Media Coverage + Representation at Auction
Second Prize: 200,000 Naira + Media Coverage + Representation at Auction
Third Prize: 100,000 Naira + Media Coverage + Representation at Auction
Highly Commended Prizes: Three prizes of 10,000 Naira each + Media Coverage + Representation at Auction
Public Vote Presentation: The top 30 artists with the highest public votes will be represented in the Chinwe Russell Living Artists auction and will receive media coverage.
Judging Criteria:
Submissions will be evaluated based on:
Distinctiveness in style, subject matter, and medium
Artistic innovation and celebration of Nigerian cultural heritage
