University of Johannesburg announces applications for 2025 Artists in Residence Programme

The University of Johannesburg is excited to announce that applications for the 2025 Artists in Residence Programme (AIR) are now open. This programme, running since 2022, offers artists the opportunity to engage in innovative practice-led research (12-months period), allowing them to showcase their work and enrich the vibrant artistic community at UJ.


Who Should Apply?

Creatives working in various media, including:​​

  • Visual and Fine Arts

  • Music

  • Theatre

  • Performance and Dance

  • Design

  • Film and Television

  • Literary Arts

Application details

  • Emerging and established artist-academics from across the globe, but preferably with a link to Africa, are eligible.

  • Applicants must hold a relevant post-school qualification.

  • Applicants may not have any affiliation with other South African tertiary institutions.

  • Current UJ employees are not eligible to apply.

  • Only proposals with creative output potential and that fall within the pre-determined disciplines will be considered.

  • The closing date for submissions is 11 September 2024.

  • While any language would be acceptable for proposed projects, the languange for the application process is English.

  • This online submission form is the only application process for the programme and manual submissions via other means will not be accepted.

  • There is no registration / application fee to submit an application for for the UJ Artists in Residence Programme.

  • The outcome will be available on 1 November 2024.


Residency details

  • Residencies will run from January - December 2025 (12-months) or January 2025 - December 2026 (24-months) for Film & Television and Literary Art projects.

  • A monthly stipend of R10,000 is made available to Artists in Residence. This payment is subject to statutory deductions.

  • Applicants may apply for remote and/or physical residencies, noting that a very limited number of offices, studios, rehearsal and performance spaces are available.




About University of Johannesburg Artists In Residency

The residency offers a unique opportunity for artists to embark on innovative practice led research, showcase their work, and contribute to the vibrant artistic community at the University of Johannesburg.


Since inception of the programme two years ago, sixteen artists have been selected to work on a range of exciting projects including several bio-art projects, music compositions, novellas, documentaries, and theatre productions.
