Gallery 1957, Ghana
Deadline: 16 September 2024
Gallery 1957 announces the continuation of its commitment to empowering Ghanaian women artists with the fourth edition of the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize. Named after the revered Queen Mother of Asante who led a resistance against colonialism, the prize celebrates both emerging and established women creators.
This year, the competition is open exclusively to Ghanaian women artists living in Ghana or abroad. The gallery hopes to expand the reach of the prize in the future to encompass all African and African diaspora artists.
Lois Selasie Arde-Acquah emerged victorious in the 2023 edition. Arde-Acquah's captivating practice begins with intricate monochrome patterns meticulously hand-drawn on various surfaces. However, her artistic journey doesn't stop there. She meticulously cuts these patterns from black synthetic leather, transforming them into immersive sculptural installations. These works explore the fascinating intersection of everyday tasks and the emergence of ritualistic performance.
Nuotama Frances Bodomo, a filmmaker, and Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah, a multidisciplinary artist, were recognized as the first and second runners-up, respectively. Their achievements further solidify the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize's role in spotlighting the diverse talents of Ghanaian women in the arts.
The winners will receive:
The first prize winner will receive an artist residency and exhibition at Gallery 1957, as well as GH₵50,000.
First runner up will be awarded GH₵30,000
