Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) on September 24, 2024, commemorates a significant milestone—a century of the iconic Grain Silo, a landmark that has transformed from a vital industrial hub into Africa’s largest museum dedicated to contemporary art. This celebratory event dovetails with South Africa’s Heritage Day, creating a unique opportunity to reflect on the intersection of history, culture, and artistic expression.
Originally constructed in 1924, the Grain Silo played a crucial role in Cape Town's economic space, symbolizing the city’s prominence in the global grain trade. However, as industrial practices evolved, the silo fell into disuse, becoming a forgotten relic. Its rebirth in 2017, under the visionary design of architect Thomas Heatherwick, marked a new chapter, positioning it as a beacon of contemporary African art and a hub for cultural dialogue.
Central to this celebration is the opening of “Silo Through the Century: Into the Contemporary,” an exhibition that permeates into the building’s rich history and its transformation into a modern art institution. Through archival images and videos, the exhibition narrates the silo's journey, reflecting the socio-political climate of South Africa over the past century.
The event also features several activities designed to engage all community members. Programme highlights include tours conducted in all the official South African languages, art workshops for the whole family, live performances, DJ sets, and an outdoor food court. Zeitz MOCAA’s sixth floor restaurant, Ocular Lounge, will have a special Heritage Day menu on offer, and the Museum Shop may be visited to purchase a selection of art-inspired gifts, books and products.
The day will culminate in a much-anticipated Silo Concert featuring renowned South African trumpeter and vocalist Mandisi Dyantyis. Known for his soul-stirring performances and acclaimed albums, Dyantyis embodies the spirit of contemporary African music, making him a fitting highlight for this momentous occasion.
In addition, Zeitz MOCAA is offering a special membership discount throughout September, inviting art enthusiasts to enjoy a year of unlimited access to exhibitions and exclusive events. This initiative aligns with the museum's mission to cultivate a collective appreciation for art and heritage.
